Dr. Kerry White Brown, an esteemed Orthodontist with nearly 20 years’ experience, gives a history lesson on the origin of braces as an orthodontic treatment.

Columbia, South Carolina — June 27, 2016 — Carolina Orthodontist Kerry Brown White recently published a new article “The History of the Metal Mouth: How We Discovered Braces As the Solution for Straightening Teeth.”

kerry-2(1) copyIn this article, Dr. White Brown starts off by giving the chronology of braces which can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Egyptians.

As she says, “Some say that the quest for the perfect smile began all the way back in ancient Egypt. Yet, it wasn’t just because they were concerned with the aesthetics of teeth straightening. Poor tooth and jaw alignment also affects how we chew and speak. Maybe that’s why archaeologists have found orthodontic dental appliances – interestingly similar to the braces we use now – on mummies! Similarly, the Greeks, Italian Etruscans, and Romans had dental adjustment methods as well.”

From there, it was a fairly natural evolution from there to where we are today with orthodontics. However, White Brown explains, it was just in the 1970’s when braces became an affordable option for tooth straightening for the masses.

She concludes with a statistic she quotes from the Atlantic that states over 4 million Americans now wear braces.
