The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, Shannon Pawley, Talks About Important Steps To Take When One Receives A Dementia Diagnosis

Shannon Pawley, The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, encourages immediate action to create a legal and financial plan when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia.

DECATUR, GA, December 27, 2024: Shannon Pawley, Owner of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new blog on the law firm’s website entitledLegal and Financial Steps for Dementia Patients.”  Ms. Pawley provides an overview of documents and decisions that need to be reviewed, discussed and put into place.

According to Pawley, “Very often Alzheimer’s Disease, and other forms of dementia are diagnosed before the patient has become mentally incapacitated.” She continues, “Once a diagnosis has been made, it’s important for the family to take immediate action and start legal and financial steps to secure the health and wellbeing of the patient and family members.  If there is an existing estate plan already in place, this is the time to review it and make any necessary updates.”

Pawley notes, “If there is not yet a plan, the first step is to bring the family together to talk about putting financial and care plans in place. Discussing financial needs and goals early on,” Pawley emphasizes, “enables the person with dementia to still understand the issues and to talk about their wishes.” She states, “It’s of utmost importance to discuss how ongoing care will be handled financially and whether the patient is eligible for Medicaid. Also, designating healthcare and financial Powers of Attorney will be an integral decision.”

Pawley provides a list of financial documents to include in discussions.
