DECATUR, GA, November 12, 2024: Shannon Pawley, Owner of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new article on the law firm’s website entitled “How Best to Protect a Loved One with Dementia When They Are Pushing You Away,” in which Ms. Pawley emphasizes the importance of remembering not to take the loved one’s behavior personally.
Pawley states, “Living with and caring for a loved one with dementia is challenging at best. I know from firsthand experience” She goes on to add, “often, when your loved one seems to be pushing you away, it can really test your fortitude.” According to Pawley, “When this kind of behavior happens, many family caregivers want to give up completely and start to talk about putting their loved one in a facility. However, depending on the situation,” Pawley states, “it’s highly likely there are loving ways to manage this kind of behavior while protecting your loved one in the comfort of home. The most important thing to remember is to not take their behavior personally. Remember your loved one is ill and their pushback, resistance, and other challenging behavior is a symptom of their condition.”
Pawley emphasizes, “Tried and true behavioral methods that, with practice, are easy to learn, can be very helpful in dealing with our loved ones with dementia. Second only to not taking things personally,” Pawley adds, “the best approach to take with your loved one is to remain calm. Many times, calmly validating their feelings, and then gently redirecting their attention to a more positive activity or interaction is all it takes to make them feel safe.” Pawley reiterates, “It’s important to keep in mind and to understand that your loved-one’s behavior is most often a result of confusion and fear related to their condition.” Pawley goes on to provide a list of behavioral tips that with practice can be very helpful in making the dementia patient feel safe.
