The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Managing Partner, Shannon Pawley, Shares Important Information Relevant To All Caregivers During COVID-19.

Estate & Asset Protection Attorney and Managing Partner, Shannon Pawley, elaborates on the differences between Caregiver Burnout and Compassion Fatigue and encourages readers to be alert to the signs and symptoms of both.

DECATUR, GA, January 31, 2021: Shannon Pawley, Managing Partner of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new article on the law firm’s website entitled “You Or Someone You Love May Have Caregiver Burnout And/Or Compassion Fatigue,” in which Ms. Pawley explains the subtle yet important differences.

Pawley writes, “The world has been negotiating the COVID-19 pandemic now for a full year. The effects of social distancing, quarantining, working from home, home schooling, caring for elderly family members, an inability to travel, along with so many other restrictions are taking their toll.” She continues, “Everyone is feeling the stress but no one more so than those who are caregivers. This includes caregivers for hire as well as the untold thousands of unpaid family members who juggle careers and children as well as aging parents.”

In an effort to differentiate the two, Pawley writes, “Family caregivers have been struggling with caregiver burnout for longer than most can remember.” She adds, “The term “compassion fatigue” was penned in the early 1990’s when registered nurse Carla Joinson described a unique form of burnout that affected caregivers and resulted in a “loss of the ability to nurture.” https://www.dvm360.com/view/compassion-fatigue-and-burnout-history-definitions-and-assessment

As Pawley notes, “It is not surprising that this term has resurfaced during COVID-19. While they may seem to be the same, it is important to recognize that caregiver burnout and compassion fatigue are not the same.” She elaborates, “According to the experts, compassion fatigue is more treatable than burnout, but it can be less predictable. It seems that compassion fatigue may come on suddenly or without much warning, while caregiver burnout typically develops over time.”

Pawley writes, “According to one source, “Some describe compassion fatigue as empathy fatigue, a biological and physiological response where you are so exhausted—physically, emotionally, psychologically—that it becomes difficult to care or feel for others. You feel “done.”  And the fatigue doesn’t stop when you’ve finished caregiving for the day. You plop on the couch, turn on the TV, and there it is—news of the pandemic crisis on every station. It’s in the headlines; it’s on the radio. It feels like there’s no escaping it.”

About Shannon M. Pawley, J.D., LL.M

Shannon is the firm’s Managing Partner.  Born and raised in the Tidewater area of Virginia to a tightknit family with strong military service roots, Shannon learned from an early age the value of hard work and the importance of social awareness to ensure you always leave a situation in a better place than how you entered it.  In her junior year of high school, Shannon served as U.S. House of Representatives Page during the 101st United States Congressional Session in Washington, D.C.  This experience exposed her to numerous new cultures and worldly issues.  Walking away from her experience as a U.S. House of Representative Page, Shannon knew that she wanted to pursue legal studies and be able to assist others in obtaining the best results available in difficult situations.

Shannon earned her undergraduate degree at North Carolina Wesleyan College and pursued a law degree from Michigan State University College of Law.  After obtaining her law degree and becoming a licensed attorney in Michigan, she continued her educational pursuit by acquiring a LL.M. (Master of Law) in Taxation from Wayne State University.
