Tax Resolution Attorney John P. Willis Warns Of A New Scam Making Use Of An Old, Tried-and-True IRS Delivery Method.

Tax resolution attorney John Willis, CEO, and founder of IRSALLSTAR, writes about an emerging scam that has caught the IRS’s attention in which attempts are made to trick taxpayers out of important information and their money using an “old-school” method.

Fairhope, AL, July ** 2023: Tax Attorney John Willis, CEO and founder of IRSALLSTAR.com, recently published a blog on his website entitled “The Latest Tax Scam Uses Old School Techniques.” Mr. Willis alerts his readers to the non-digital method being used to trick taxpayers.

“By now,” Willis writes, “just about everybody is aware of how criminals use digital forms of communication to scam the unsuspecting victims out of financial information and hard-earned money. So,” he continues, “being the brilliant criminals that they are, their next move is to go “old school.” That’s right. The IRS recently published a warning about the latest scam. They say that scammers are now using the regular mail to prey on people.”

As Willis notes, “Officials at The Internal Revenue Service say that, “bad actors are using the mail delivery system to prey on people by telling them they’re owed a refund. Officials say the mailing comes in a cardboard envelope from a delivery service. Inside is a letter featuring the IRS masthead with wording about an unclaimed refund. The recipient is then urged to provide sensitive information through non-agency contact options.” https://www.publicnewsservice.org/2023-07-11/consumer/scammers-go-old-school-with-irs-mailing/a85293-1

According to Willis, “Over the few years, I’ve written about the many ways criminals try to trick taxpayers through emails, text messages, and phone calls. I’m not surprised to see that the scammers are now reverting to the method that the IRS typically uses to contact taxpayers. But,” Willis acknowledges, “there’s one thing the scammers have overlooked: The IRS doesn’t get fancy. Cardboard envelopes simply would not be used by the IRS.”
