Tax Resolution Attorney, Jeffrey T. Jones Clues Taxpayers Into An Ongoing Phone Scam By Fake IRS Agents

Tax resolution attorney Jeffrey T. Jones, founder of the Law Offices of Jeffrey T. Jones, and best-selling author of “
Protect and Defend” warns taxpayers to be wary of anyone who calls and identifies themselves as an IRS agent.

Charleston, WV, January 15, 2015: Tax resolution specialist attorney Jeffrey T. Jones, founder of the Law Offices of Jeffrey T. Jones, and best-selling author of “Protect and Defend has posted a new blog on his website entitled “The IRS Doesn’t Call, They Write. Anyone Who Calls is a Scammer.”  Even though the IRS has continued to alert the public, the scammers continue to trick unsuspecting taxpayers.

As Mr. Jones writes in his current blog, “As late as last November, the IRS reissued warnings about scammers placing phone calls to taxpayers posing as IRS agents. Throughout the past year more than 1000 taxpayers have fallen prey to the scammers who have bilked the unsuspecting victims out of $5 million.”

Jones informs his readers that anything other than an official letter from the IRS is suspect. He writes, “Always remember, the initial contact by the IRS is NOT on the phone. They contact you by a series of official letters by regular and certified mail.” Jones elaborates, “It’s not just tax refunds or alleged past due taxes these cons are after. They’re trying to gain access to your financial information so they can then get into to your bank accounts.”

Further, writes Jones, “These scammers are particularly sophisticated and aggressive. In fact, they are now calling taxpayers telling them are going to jail and that they are sending the police over to take them right away if they don’t agree to pay over the phone.” Fear tactics work for con artists, however Jones advises, “Should you receive a call from anyone saying they are from the IRS, hang up the phone and call the number back. If you don’t have caller ID ask for a number so you can call them back. Most likely the call won’t go through, so then you need to call the actual IRS and report the number and name of the person who called. Always make sure you ask for their name and badge number. Even though the names and badge numbers are fake, they may help the IRS track the scammers.”
