Personal Injury Attorney, Eva Brindisi Pearlman, Reveals Illegal School Bus Passing Statistics.
Utica, NY, June 9, 2015: Personal Injury attorney, Eva Brindisi Pearlman, partner at the Law Offices of Brindisi, Murad, Brindisi & Pearlman, has posted a new blog on the law offices website entitled “A Look at School Bus Stop Arm Violations in One Single Day” in which she reports statistics from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS).
According to Pearlman, “During a 2014 conference, the NASDPTS asked each state to choose one day during which school bus operators would “observe and report any instances of motorists illegally passing their school buses.” http://www.nasdpts.org/stoparm/2014/index.html
Pearlman continues, “On a single day in 29 states, school bus drivers recorded how many times motorists passed their school buses while the buses were stopped and displaying their flashing red lights and stop arms. At the end of the day according to the NASDPTS, “Over 97,000 school bus drivers reported that 75,966 vehicles passed their buses illegally on a single day.” The NASDPTS applied the results to a 180-day school year, which indicates on an annual basis “over 13 million violations by private motorists.”
She states, “I am encouraging New York State residents to write, email, text or call their state legislators to insist they support the School Bus Camera Safety Act.” This will allow school districts to use cameras on school buses to detect violators that illegally pass or overtake a school bus. Perlman further adds, “Our children are at risk getting on and off school buses. And very often they are at risk from their own parents and caretakers on their way to pick up their children. This activity is done so frequently that it is done on autopilot and today combined with time-crunched schedules and the distraction of cell phones and other devices, the danger is greater than ever.”
