Nilo A. Hernandez, Jr., DDS, DICOI, Owner of Smilecreator Of Naples Talks About The Size And Normal Bacterial Condition Of The Mouth And Its Role In Disease.
Nilo Hernandez, Jr., DDS, DICOI, best-selling co-author of the book, The Will To Win, with Brian Tracy, and owner of the Smilecreator of Naples, reminds readers that the mouth is one of the biggest and easiest access points for viruses and germs to enter the body and how important oral health is in overall health.
Naples, FL, April 30, 2020: Owner and CEO of Smilecreator of Naples, Dr. Nilo Hernandez, Jr., DDS, has posted a new article on his website entitled, “Your Mouth Is The Biggest Gateway To The Inside Of Your Body And Disease,” in which Dr. Hernandez reviews how COVID19 is transmitted and
Dr. Hernandez states, “A clean healthy mouth is one of the most important keys to a healthy body.” He continues adding, “We are learning this clearly as a result of COVID19. The mouth, being the largest orifice on your face, is the way most viruses, bacteria and germs enter the body and cause illness.” He emphasizes, “We are all becoming experts at how this particular virus is transmitted…or at least everyone should be.”
“Just in case you aren’t sure how the COVID19 virus is transmitted,” says Dr. Hernandez, “here it is.” He explains, “The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on floors or surfaces. You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within 4 feet of a person who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.”
Unfortunately, as Dr. Hernandez points out, humans can’t seem to keep their hands away from their faces. He writes, “Studies have found that people touch their faces more than 16 times in an hour. In fact, we touch our faces so often that the odds of re-contaminating our hands between washings are extremely high.” He further adds, “Since the eyes and the mouth are areas where viruses can easily enter the body, many experts suggest wearing gloves can help break the habit of frequently touching your face.”
Dr. Hernandez turns his attention to the normal environment in the mouth. He writes, “Add to the fact that the human mouth is full of bacteria because the mouth is a warm, wet environment, and these are perfect conditions for bacteria to reproduce.” He invites readers to “Consider this: About 800 to 1,000 different types of bacteria may call your mouth “home.” Despite their tiny size, bacteria can do some big damage to your mouth. They do this by forming a sticky layer called plaque on your teeth, causing damage to your teeth and gums by releasing acids. These acids break down tooth enamel and can cause tooth decay. The bacteria in plaque can also foster swollen, painful gums.”
