New York Dental Practice Shares AAP Recommendations for Infant Dental Care
Dr. William P. Caldon, D.M.D., co-owner of Plattsburgh’s High Peaks Dental, discusses the importance of fluoride treatment for young children.
Plattsburgh, NY — April 1, 2016 — Renowned Plattsburgh dentist Dr. William Caldon published a new blog post entitled “American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends Fluoride for Infants.” In the post, he explains what fluoride is, how it prevents cavities and the recommended treatments for children as young as six months old.
Says Caldon, “Many new parents wonder when to start taking their children to the dentist. Is it at one year old or two? You might be surprised to learn that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States. Tooth decay can cause localized infections, sometimes causing serious illness or even death, and it increases the risk for systemic illnesses, like diabetes, to develop later in life. The good news is – tooth decay is largely preventable. A recent change in fluoride recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) gives parents a reason to begin scheduling professional dental visits as soon as an infant’s teeth come in. The updated recommendations call for fluoride varnish to be applied to a child’s teeth every three to six months, beginning at six months old.”
Dr. Caldon has been a co-owner of High Peaks Dental since 1996 after serving in the
United States Air Force for 20 years and retiring as a Colonel. He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Louisville and his Bachelor’s from Thomas More College. In 2013, USA Today featured Caldon as one of America’s Premier Dentists.
