New York Dental Practice Says Baking Soda Can Whiten Teeth, But Also Wear Down Dental Enamel

Dr. William P. Caldon, D.M.D., co-owner of Plattsburgh’s High Peaks Dental, discusses the popular home remedy for whitening teeth, baking soda, as well as the risk it poses to our delicate dental enamel.

Plattsburgh, NY — June 25, 2015 — Renowned Plattsburgh dentist Dr. William Caldon published a new blog post entitled “Can Brushing With Baking Soda Whiten Your Teeth?” In the post, he explains that while an effective tooth whitener, over-using baking soda can actually wear away at dental enamel, which poses an oral health risk.

Says Caldon, “Baking soda’s whitening power doesn’t just come from its chemical properties — it also comes from its abrasiveness. The texture acts as a scrub that can help rid your teeth of unsightly stains, but it can also wear down the dentin and enamel, which make up the bulk of our teeth, and therefore puts them at risk. This doesn’t mean you can’t use baking soda to help add a little sparkle to your teeth — you just have to do it wisely. Talk to your dentist about incorporating baking soda into your oral hygiene routine, and always brush gently using a soft toothbrush.”

Dr. Caldon has been a co-owner of High Peaks Dental since 1996 after serving in the United States Air Force for 20 years and retiring as a Colonel. He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Louisville and his Bachelor’s from Thomas More College. In 2013, USA Today featured Caldon as one of America’s Premier Dentists.
