Milwaukee Area Dentist Tony Cigno Publishes New Piece Discussing the Recent “Natural Toothpaste” Trend Including Pros and Cons

Milwaukee area dentist Dr. Tony shares information about natural toothpastes and whether they are appropriate for dental needs.

Greenfield, WI — September 7, 2018 — Wisconsin Dentist Tony Cigno recently published an article titled, “Why Natural Toothpaste Might Not be the Best Choice for Dental Care.”

Dr. Tony CignoToday, there’s a big push to go as natural as possible in many different areas—from foods, medicines and supplements to household cleaners. Also coming under scrutiny and even fire, are things point on the body as well as in it. Examples include lotion, sprays and makeup too.

Well, another recent push is the move to – and belief that – natural toothpastes are better for you and do the job as well as the commercial brands like Colgate and Crest (et al.). As Dr. Cigno explains, “These “healthier” products claim to be composed of more eco-friendly and natural ingredients. Furthermore, some of these products claim to have other positive effects in your mouth as well, such as strengthening your teeth, detoxifying your mouth, reducing inflammation, or killing bacteria.”

But is all this true? Or too-good-to-be-true?

Dr. Cigno shares that recently, all these claims caught the attention of a group of colleagues at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. A trio of three men even published a review of charcoal as used in dental products, since that is one of the most popular natural dental ingredients that has boomed in popularity as of late.

So, did charcoal stand up to the claims?

Dr. Cigno says, “No.” Specifically, “These scientists did not find any strong evidence regarding whether charcoal is safe or effective. Other scientists who have done research on charcoal for use in tooth products in India, came to split conclusions about whether charcoal was more of less effective at reducing cavities than chewing on a stick.”

On the other hand, Dr. Cigno concedes, the researches didn’t say that charcoal was bad—just that there wasn’t any evidence to support the promises they were advertising.

In the remainder of the piece, Dr. Cigno reviews some of the other “natural” toothpastes and ingredients and whether they too, are more hype than help.
