Balanced Living Expert Susan Sly Discusses Breaking Free From Social Media Addiction to Restore Work Life Balance
Best-selling author, time management expert, and work life balance specialist, speaker, and performance coach Susan Sly releases new article about how to break free of social media addiction and restore work-life balance.
Scottsdale, AZ. — May 10, 2017— Best-selling author, speaker, and entrepreneur Susan Sly recently published a new article, “When Social Media Addiction Steals Your Work-Life Balance: How to Break Free.”
Susan starts by acknowledging that social media surely has some merits. You can catch or keep up with family and friends and even catch a much-needed minute or two of humor in a stressful day.
Yet, she counters, a lot of people come to use social media as a substitute for real, in-person, socializing and interaction. But the Harvard Business Review says it doesn’t carry the same positive benefits. In fact, they discovered the overuse of social media – social media addiction – not only doesn’t fulfill a person’s need for human interaction but also might be bad for mental health.
“Of course,” Susan explains, “this correlation varies depending on intensity and frequency of use. Yet, it’s always there.”
The remainder of Susan’s article goes into how to break this social media addiction. Specifically, she gives three ways this can be done.
First, she has you assess the situation—asking yourself how much time you spend on social media and then answering the question honestly. Additionally, she provides the name of an app called QualityTime that tracks your social usage on all platforms.
Susan also suggests putting your devices down – and social media away – for a while. She explains, “When you are constantly being pinged – with new messages being announced – it’s distracting. It’s also a prompt to jump in and see what’s up—what you’re ‘missing.’ That’s why turning those notifications off is a great help in minimizing social media use.”
Further ideas she provides include paring down friends lists, limiting your own social postings, and even deleting some of your social media accounts.
