Academy of International Dentistry Fellow, Don Shaw on Health Threat of Failing an Acid Test.
Dr. Don Shaw, partner and co-owner of Bess & Shaw Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, reveals that mouth breathing contributes to tooth erosion and decay as much as drinking a fizzy sugary beverage before going to bed.
Beaumont, TX, April 12, 2016: Partner and co-owner of Bess & Shaw Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Don Shaw, DDS posted a new blog on his website entitled, “Do Your Sleeping Habits Pass the Acid Test?” Dr. Shaw questions readers asking, “Do you sleep with your mouth open or closed?” He continues saying, “If you are a mouth breather you definitely don’t pass the acid test.”
Shaw elaborates by asking another question. “What do you suppose would happen if, instead of brushing your teeth before going to bed each night you drank a fizzy soda or glass of orange juice?” He assumes that, “We all know that drinking either of those things before going to bed is going to cause tooth erosion and decay.” “That’s why,” says Shaw, “we all practice good oral hygiene and brush our teeth before retiring at night.”
As Shaw proceeds, he states, “But, now scientists have discovered something that will cause just as much damage to the teeth as if you had gone to bed right after consuming a sugary drink. An article in Sleep Review Magazine published findings that state, “Sleeping with your mouth open can cause tooth erosion and decay.” They agree that mouth breathing can be “as damaging to teeth as sipping a fizzy drink before bed.”
