The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, Shannon Pawley, Provides An Overview of The Problems That Happen When Families Depend On A Will Alone To Protect Their Loved Ones

Shannon Pawley, The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, writes about the shortfalls that can be expected when relying solely on a Will to protect loved ones.

DECATUR, GA, May 28, 2026: Shannon Pawley, Owner of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new blog on the law firm’s website entitledWhy a Will Alone May Not Protect Your Family.” In which Ms. Pawley points out the pitfalls.

Pawley writes, “Once there was a time when a Last Will and Testament was all many people would have needed to pass on moderate assets and protect loved ones upon their passing. She continues emphasizing, “But times have changed dramatically and while a Will is still an important estate planning tool, relying on a Will alone can leave your loved ones exposed to delays, legal costs, and unexpected complications.”

As Pawley notes, “It’s important to understand that some assets are not controlled by a Will. For instance, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and jointly owned property often pass directly to named beneficiaries, regardless of what a Will states.” She explains, “If beneficiary designations are outdated, assets may unintentionally go to the wrong person.”

Additionally, a Will does not automatically protect assets from disputes or challenges. Family disagreements over inheritance, unclear wording, or claims from creditors can create emotional and financial strain for surviving relatives. In blended families or situations involving minor children, these issues can become even more complicated.

According to Pawley, “A Will is an essential first step, but it should always be part of a complete estate planning strategy designed to safeguard your family’s future and reduce uncertainty during difficult times.”
