Wissenbach writes, “There was an experiment a while back in which scientists put fleas into a glass jar – and as you’d expect, the fleas jumped right out. The scientists put the fleas back into the glass jar and to prevent them jumping out, they put a lid on. When the fleas jumped, they knocked their little flea heads against the lid, and pretty soon, they learned not to jump so high. The fleas hopped so they’d reach just below the lid. When the lid was removed, the fleas had learned to only jump so high, so even when they could escape, it didn’t occur to them to do so.”
